Tiffany's Story
Winning this bicycle changed my life in an instant! The fact that I am a bicycle/ped planner and advocate that doesn't know how to ride a bike completely baffles people. They seem so eager to teach me to learn but what they couldn't seem to grasp is that, unlike most, riding a bike just wasn't something that was a part of my childhood. I didn't grow up in a terrible neighborhood, but given some of the events of the day my family was very protective and didn't really allow me to play outside. I never wanted a bike because I never saw anyone WITH a bike!
As an adult, I saw bike riding as an opportunity lost for me until I learned about classes that teach adults to ride. Since then, I've been saying that I want to learn to ride but I haven't "owned" that statement - until now. A couple of years back, I was given a bike to assist me in my learning but I never really viewed it as my own. The moment I won the raffle and had my choice of a bike I knew this was my opportunity to have a bike that I could call my own. I immediately checked out the Bike&Walk Montclair website to find out when the date of the next Learn to Ride class for Adults and put it in my Google calendar. In my excitement, I also contacted my mom to see if she wanted to take the class with me.
What you see in the picture is a BEAUTIFUL bike that is sooo me. Thanks to the Partners for Health Foundation, Diamond Cycle, and all my supporters for pushing me forward ;-)
